“On The Grapevine” was a long running section in past Community News issues. These are some Grapevine snippets from Issue #34 December 1979:

Birthday wishes to Barbara Andrews of Kulnura for her 21st on November 27th.

Welcome to George and Ester Williams who arrive from England in December for 3 months vacation with Jack and Elsee Williams of Somersby.

Members of the Spencer Primary School held a most successful cake stall in the school grounds on Saturday 10th November. Some super cooks, judging by the products. They will be holding a Mini Fair in the school grounds, on Saturday, 1st December. Everyone welcome so do come along and bring your money with you. Commences 10 a.m.

Congratulations to John Price.
Remember John in your prayers as he will be ordained as a Priest on December 1st at Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle beginning at 9.30 a.m.

Congratulations to Philip Lentfer on turning 21.

Four extracts, also from Community News issue #34

1979 Poppy Ball

This year’s Poppy Ball was held on the 10th November at the R.S.L. Club, Mangrove Mountain and the host was the President of the Sub Branch, Mr Bill Douglas, and his wife Diane.

Among the official guests were Martin Owens, newly appointed District Counsellor and Mrs Owens; Laurie Flynn, who is now on the Repatriation Review Tribunal; Athol Frewin, representing Gosford R.S.L. and Mrs Frewin; Alec Armour, Ourimbah R.S.L. and Mrs Armour; Mangrove Mountain Sub Branch Patron, Rex Burns and John Cowper, Vice President of the Mangrove Mountain Sub Branch and Mrs Cowper. The Mangrove Mountain Auxiliary was represented by President, Brenda Knight and Secretary, Shirley Clarke. Mrs Willis, a Counsellor on the Northern Metropolitan Auxiliary, Harold Ward and Mrs Ward, Eric Browning and numerous other hard working members.

Mrs Wilga Hodson was judged Queen of the Ball by Mesdames Flynn, Willis and Owens. Mrs. Hodson also won this title in 1977. Mrs Hodson chose a beige dress with a floral rose design on the material. A flared cape was a feature of the dress. Her prize was a lovely fine gold mesh stole.

Compliments must go the band, ‘Keynotes’ who really kept everyone on their toes and also to the caterers who did a superb job.

Kulnura Public School

Kulnura school pupils were fascinated to see all the 2 and 3 man tents that had mushroomed overnight on their top oval. Pupils from Year 6 at Barraba Primary School in north western N.S.W. spent three days in camp at Kulnura while they visited some of our local attractions, including Old Sydney Town, the Reptile Park and Terrigal beach.

Fifty five children, four teachers and their bus driver thoroughly enjoyed their stay and the combined social held with the Kulnura children on the last night of their stay.

The next P. & C. meeting will be held on the 4th December, with the break-up social the following week on the 11th December, at the Kulnura Hall.

Somersby C.W.A. News

Our new President, Mrs Shirley Templeton chaired the November meeting, and in pride of place on the official table was the silver rose bowl, awarded to the Branch for the best cultural report presented at the annual Group Conference.

Last month’s bus trip to the Japanese Gardens at Auburn and Old Parramatta made an enjoyable outing, and added $20.50 to our bank balance.

Mrs S. Templeton, B. Mawson and M. Dornan attended the C.W.A. state fete in Sydney early this month, and were kept busy – on the stalls, which some of our members had helped to stock with homemade jams.

Another letter from our link branch in England has been received, and Mrs G. Morris is to write a reply to this latest letter.

We have received with much pleasure an invitation to Lisarow-Ourimbah’s Christmas party on 12th December, at 11 a.m. It will be held at Mrs. Rene Steen’s home in Glen Road, Ourimbah and our members are to supply the dessert course. As this day is our usual meeting day, we will deal with any urgent business during the time we are at Mrs Steen’s and our entertainment committee would especially like suggestions for next year’s social programme.

A practical suggestion to put old sheets to good use has sent us all home to our linen cupboards. Torn into strips of any length, width from 2” to 4” and rolled into bandages, these can then be sent to hospitals staffed by the Leprosy Mission in New Guinea and India. Any bandages, sealed in small plastic bags, can be brought to our next meeting for despatch.

Mrs M. Witherby is again collecting small gifts for patients at Stockton Hospital and these can be brought to our next meeting. We have all donated 50c towards gifts for patients at Morisset Hospital.

Our International officer, Mrs M. Lawrence, is to attend the study weekend on Greece to be held at Armidale next February and we will all benefit from the information she gleans there.

Mr Barry Philips talked to us briefly about the efforts to establish a co-operative vegetable growing project for the district’s unemployed. Although land in Somersby is under cultivation, the lack of Government support and legal recognition of the enterprise make the operation very difficult. Nature also seems to be against it, with lack of good rain for a long period.

Publicity Officer
