This week, my office became aware of social media comments that threatened harm to myself and my office. Subsequently, my team reported this to NSW Police.
I am advised that as a result of this report, a man has been charged with using carriage service to cause serious harm.
Since my election in 2017, I have worked day and night to represent the people of our community.
When I was elected, I was aware that there would be people that disagree with me – robust debate is an important part of our democracy.
In our community we sadly continue to see individuals using social media platforms to cause significant harm to many people.
This behaviour impacts young people in schools, community members and advocates, and those who seek public office, sadly being a disincentive for those who offer to work to improve our community.
Sadly, this behaviour can discourage constructive community discussion and create an environment where fear and hostility outweigh respectful debate.
I thank those who have taken the time to send messages of love and support.
This matter is currently before the court. I will allow the court to continue to do their very important work.
