We at Mountain Medicine would like to congratulate Dr Christine Wade and her team at Silver Gully Square Meaters, on their win at the Royal Canberra Agricultural Show this month.
Milly and Christine, with great help from Lewis, and Erin Wilcox won Grand Champion Cow with Silver Gully Umbria and her calf Walter. Erin came over from Margaret River in Western Australia to help with the Harvest Festival in June, and selected the team for the show back then. She then came back in October and chose Umbria as the cow to take to show. Milly spent weeks training with Umbria to improve her skill at the lead, and it was Milly who walked with Umbria and Walter in the ring.
This is the 30th anniversary year of Square Meaters Australia, and the Royal Canberra Show was attended by Square Meater growers from all over Australia, coming from as far as Western Australia and South Australia. To have a win in this class of competitor is a huge achievement.
Umbria won for being judged as having the ‘most outstanding’ confirmation with 4 good feet and perfect udder, and her calf Walter also had great from and a good square line standing. Correspondingly, Umbria was the youngest cow in her class.
Dr Wade has been breeding Square Meater Cattle since 2000 and has much success with this breed.
