Staff from Greater Sydney Landcare have recently noticed a decline in insects, including European and native bees, spiders and other bugs, in both urban and bushland areas. This will ultimately lead to a decline in native plant and food plant production and species, including birds that depend on insects and seeds.
A great way to protect the insects in your garden is to plant flowers that attract beneficial insects, such as beetles and lacewings, that will prey on the nasties.
Use Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Select less toxic options. Don’t spray flowering plants when bees are foraging. Do not contaminate water. Provide pollinator refuges away from active paddocks.
Greater Sydney Landcare is holding its Annual General Meeting online on Tuesday 26 November, from 4 pm and is keen for anyone working in the ‘care’ space to attend.
A Landcare Day to celebrate Greater Sydney Landcare’s 10th birthday is scheduled for Friday 22 November, in South Western Sydney.
