Sebastian Southern addresses the attendees at Spencer Community Hall

River Cares hosted its third CB Radio Training session on Saturday, 6th December, and we warmly thank everyone who braved the searing heat to attend. As we move deeper into the bushfire season, it was wonderful to see so many residents committed to strengthening our community’s emergency readiness.

The Emergency Communications CB Radio Network was implemented by the Mangrove Emergency Planning & Communications Committee (MEPCC) and incorporates over 300 CB radios, including base stations, hand held and vehicle mounted units. These are ordinary UHF CBs on channel 57.

The River Cares Committee provided additional handheld CBs for Spencer and the River communities. The CB network now extends from Gunderman to Wollombi and out to Marlow, Somersby and Jilliby.

Funding from the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Program and FRRR enabled River Cares to purchase nearly 100 CB radio handsets, now distributed across Greengrove, Gunderman, Lower Mangrove, Lower Mount White, Marlow, Spencer and Wendoree Park.

After training, the community enjoyed a beautiful shared dinner. A heartfelt thank you to George and Lee-Ann Vassilimis for the mouth-watering lamb, and musicians Mark Hudson, Karl Mackie and Shane Clarke for their performances.
