Share your feedback to help Council support communities to prepare for, respond to and recover from natural disasters.
Research has shown that the communities that are connected and help each other prepare and respond in an emergency recover quicker and are more resilient.
The draft Natural Disaster Resilience Strategy sets out a coordinated framework to build disaster resilience across the Central Coast by embedding natural hazard risk management into Council planning, infrastructure, community capability, and emergency preparedness.
Disaster resilience means being better prepared, better connected and better able to recover when natural disasters happen.
Strategy priorities are:
- Integrate disaster resilience into Council planning systems
- Improve understanding of disaster risk and community vulnerability
- Embed resilience into infrastructure planning and asset management
- Strengthen land-use planning and resilient urban design
- Advance climate change adaptation planning
- Build community capacity and leverage local knowledge
- Invest in critical infrastructure resilience
- Protect natural systems that reduce hazard impacts
- Strengthen emergency response and recovery systems
- Embed lessons learned from disasters into continuous improvement
In 2023, Central Coast Council secured two years of funding to develop Connected Communities: Resilience Action Plans (CCRAPs) in selected target areas. These plans aim to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience in communities affected by flood and/or fire.
The CCRAPs were developed through extensive community consultation and include risk mapping, hazard identification, recognition of community values, prioritised actions, and implementation strategies.
From this consultation and other programs, the draft Natural Disaster Resilience Strategy was formed.
