Public toilets at Mangrove Mountain

Central Coast Council has embarked on a program to renew the public toilets in the LGA.

In September 2024 Council released its Public Toilet Strategy Overview, a document that outlines the approach that has been taken. The brochure explains “Why a Public Toilet Strategy”: Public toilets are vital community infrastructure that support the health and wellbeing of Central Coast residents, workers and visitors.

The Central Coast Council Public Toilet Strategy outlines a strategic approach to the provision of public toilets across the Central Coast Local Government Area in community settings such as parks, reserves and town centres.

This Strategy aligns with other Council strategies and initiatives, including land use planning, pedestrian and bike route planning, playspaces and recreation planning, to create a cohesive approach to the provision of community infrastructure.

The brochure provides a snapshot of the proposed works outlined in the Strategy. It highlights Council’s vision for contemporary, accessible and sustainable public toilets that meet the needs of the Central Coast community.

All new public toilets to be built by Council will be built considering the application of S.M.A.R.T principles covering Siting + Placemaking, Multi-functional, Accessible + Inclusive, Reliable + Sustainable, and Technology features.

Proposed new toilet locations include NGW03 at Fred Pinkstone Oval, Peats Ridge. Toilets to be renewed or renovated include EGW01 at Somersby, EGW07 at Kariong Community Hall, and EW08 at Kulnura.

A member of the Mangrove Mountain & Districts Community Group initiated contact with Council over the sorry state of the Mangrove Mountain Public toilets, including the effluent leaks. These facilities have now been added to the renewal program.

Rather than a rebuild, the Mountain facilities are currently tagged for renovation with the installation of flushing toilets.

The decision to demolish the Kulnura toilets and rebuild them in a new location has been queried as the proposed facilities will be smaller.

In Yarramalong, the Jack Gear Reserve toilets have not been included in the program but Council has been asked if the toilets can be kept open during the day and only locked at night.
